How to Buy a Used Computer (Without Getting Burned)

Buying a used computer is one of the smartest moves you can make with your money - but only if you know what to look for. Walk in blind and you might end up with someone else's problem. Walk in informed and you'll walk out with a great machine at a price that actually makes sense.

Here's what we'd tell a friend.

Know What You Actually Need It For

Before you look at anything, be honest about how you'll use it. Browsing the web and answering email? Almost any machine from the last five years will do. Video editing or gaming? You'll need to pay closer attention to specs. There's no point paying more for power you'll never use - and no point saving money on a machine that can't keep up.

Check the Basics First

When you're buying from a private seller or an unknown source, run through this before anything else:

• Screen: Look for dead pixels, yellowing, or cracks along the edges. Screens are expensive to replace.
• Battery: On a laptop, ask how the battery health is. A machine with a poor-condition battery isn't very portable and will need a replacement.
• Keyboard and ports: Press every key. Plug something into every port. It takes two minutes and it matters.
• Storage: Solid-state drives (SSDs) are significantly faster than older hard drives. If the machine has an SSD, that's a good sign.
• Performance: Open a browser, load a few tabs, move some files around. If it feels sluggish during a demo, it'll feel sluggish at home.
